Can you feel that shift in the air? Today is April 30th, and as we stand on the doorstep of May, there is a distinct energy building up in Houston. The mornings are crisp, the afternoons are golden, and there’s an undeniable urge to break free from the four walls of the gym and get under the open sky.
If you’ve been feeling a little stuck in your routine: maybe the treadmill is starting to feel like a hamster wheel or your living room workout space is feeling a bit cramped: I have the perfect solution for you. This May, we are taking the party outside.
I’m Autumn Chastain, and if there is one thing I believe to my core, it’s that fitness should feel like a celebration of what your body can do, not a punishment for what you ate. And what better way to celebrate than by dancing under the sun (or the stars!) with a community that cheers you on?
This month, I am inviting you to join me for Zumba Under the Sun. We’re hitting two of the most iconic spots in Houston to shake off the stress and soak up the Vitamin D. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or you think you have two left feet, there is a spot on the dance floor waiting for you.
Why Outdoor Fitness is a Game Changer
There’s actual science behind why taking your workout outdoors feels so much better than staying inside. When you step out of the air conditioning and into the natural light, your body responds. You get a boost of Vitamin D, which is essential for bone health and immune function, but more importantly, it’s a natural mood elevator.

Beyond the biology, there’s the psychological "reset." When you exercise outdoors, your brain isn't just focused on the clock or the calorie counter. You’re taking in the sights, the sounds of the city, and the breeze. This "green exercise" (or "urban grey exercise" in our beautiful city!) has been shown to reduce cortisol levels: the stress hormone: much more effectively than indoor workouts.
In May, the weather is in that "sweet spot." It’s warm enough to get a great sweat going, but we haven't quite hit that oppressive August humidity yet. It’s the perfect time to build a habit of movement that feels like play.
Our May Zumba Destinations
I’ve curated our outdoor schedule to give you two very different, but equally empowering, experiences right here in the heart of Houston.
1. The Rooftop Vibe: Zumba at Post Houston
On the first Thursday of every month, we take over the rooftop at Post Houston. If you haven't been there yet, you are in for a treat. Imagine dancing with the entire Houston skyline as your backdrop. There is something incredibly powerful about moving your body while looking out over the city. It reminds you how big the world is and how much space there is for you to grow.
It’s high-energy, it’s scenic, and it feels like a night out with friends rather than a "class." We kick things off and let the music lead the way. You can find more details about our Zumba at Post Houston sessions here to see what the vibe is all about.
2. The Community Heartbeat: Trebly Park
For the rest of the month, on every other Thursday at 6:30 PM, we head to Trebly Park. I love this spot because it feels like the heartbeat of the neighborhood. At 6:30 PM, the sun starts its slow descent, the shadows get long, and the temperature starts to drop just enough to make a high-intensity Zumba session feel amazing.
Trebly Park is all about community. We have regulars, newcomers, and even people passing by who stop to join in for a song or two. It’s a no-judgment zone where the goal is simply to keep moving. If you’ve been looking for a way to connect with others while hitting your fitness goals, this is it.
Overcoming "Gym-timidation" Outdoors
I know what some of you are thinking. "Autumn, if I’m outside, people might see me! What if I mess up the steps?"
Let’s talk about that. "Gym-timidation" is real, and the idea of exercising in public can feel vulnerable. But here’s the "insider" secret: No one is watching you to see if you trip. They are watching you because you look like you’re having the time of your life!

When we dance outdoors, we are showing the world that health and wellness don't have to be hidden away or look perfect. My classes are a "Presence" zone. We focus on being present in our bodies, not on being perfect in our technique. If you turn left when I turn right? That’s just a solo! As long as you’re moving and smiling, you’re doing it right.
How to Prepare for Your Outdoor Session
To make sure you have the best experience possible, here are a few "pro-tips" for our May sessions:
Hydrate Early: Don't wait until you get to the park to start drinking water. Start sipping throughout the day so your body is ready for the sweat.
The Right Footwear: Since we’ll be on rooftop surfaces or park pavement, make sure you wear supportive sneakers with good cushioning. Your joints will thank you!
Sun Protection: Even at 6:30 PM, those rays can be sneaky. A little SPF and maybe a hat will keep you protected.
Bring a Friend: Everything is better with a buddy. Invite someone who needs a mood boost or a reason to get out of the house.
Self-Compassion: If you feel tired, take a break. If you get confused, laugh it off. We are there to build ourselves up, not tear ourselves down.
A Month of Celebration
May is a very special month for me personally: my birthday is on the 25th! 🎂 Because of that, I always view May as a time of reflection and massive growth. I use this month to celebrate how far I’ve come and to set intentions for the rest of the year.
I want to invite you to do the same. Don't wait for "someday" to start prioritizing your joy and your health. Whether you join us for a walk with the Stryd Walk Club or you come shake it with us at Zumba, the important thing is that you show up for you.

Join the Conversation
If you’re looking for more support or want to connect with other women who are on this journey of mindful movement and wellness, come join our online community. We have a great Health and Wellness Group where we share tips, encouragement, and updates on all our local Houston events.
If you're ready for a deeper dive into habit formation and presence, you might also want to check out our Presence Cohort. It’s a space where we go beyond the workout and look at the mindset that keeps us consistent and happy.
Final Thoughts: Let's Dance!
May is calling, Houston. The music is loud, the sun is shining, and the community is waiting for you. There is no requirement to be "in shape" or "good at dancing" to join us. The only requirement is a willingness to step outside your comfort zone and into the fresh air.
Check the full blog feed for more tips on staying active this summer, and mark your calendars for our first Thursday at Post Houston.
I can't wait to see your faces and feel the energy of this incredible community. Let's make this May a month of movement, sunshine, and pure joy.
See you on the dance floor!
With love and empowerment,
Autumn
