Happy April, Houston! Can you feel it? The air is shifting, the azaleas are in full bloom, and there is a specific kind of energy humming through the streets. Spring isn’t just a change in the weather; it’s a total system reset. It’s the season of the "awakening."
For so many of us, the first few months of the year are a blur of resolutions, cold mornings, and grinding through the final stretch of winter. But April? April is where we stop just doing and start being. This month, our theme is The Power of Presence.

The Lessons of Spring Awakening
I’ve been thinking a lot lately about the concept of "Spring Awakening." You might know it as the famous play or musical, a story about teenagers navigating the messy, beautiful, and sometimes tragic path to adulthood. While the story is over a century old, its core message is urgently relevant to us in 2026: The tragedy of life isn't just in the hard moments; it’s in the silence and the absence.
In the play, the characters suffer when the adults in their lives choose absence over presence. They stop listening. They stop seeing the struggle. In our own lives, we often play both roles, we are the "adult" who is too busy to listen to our own body’s "teenage" cries for rest, movement, or connection.
Presence is our resistance. When you show up to a workout and actually feel your feet hitting the pavement, that’s presence. When you sit in a coaching session and finally voice the fear you’ve been hiding, that’s presence. Like the song "Purple Summer" from the musical, spring reminds us that renewal is inevitable, but we endure and thrive much better when someone, specifically ourselves, is present to witness the journey.

A Final Note on Self-Compassion
As we move into this "Spring Awakening," remember that growth isn't always linear. Some days you will feel like a powerhouse, and other days you might feel like you’re just trying to keep your head above water. Both versions of you deserve to be present.
Don't wait until you've lost the weight, hit the PR, or finished the project to be happy. The "Power of Presence" means finding joy in the messy middle. It means celebrating the fact that you showed up for yourself today, even if all you did was take a five-minute walk or drink an extra glass of water.
