Networking 2.0: Building Community Through Movement

Let’s be honest for a second: when was the last time you actually enjoyed a networking event?

If you’re a high achiever, your calendar is likely a minefield of "quick coffee chats," LinkedIn reach-outs, and happy hours where everyone is holding a lukewarm drink while rehearsing their 30-second elevator pitch. It’s transactional. It’s draining. And for women who are already juggling a career, a personal life, and a quest for wellness, it often feels like just another "to-do" that lacks any real soul.

But what if networking didn’t have to feel like a performance? What if, instead of exchanging business cards in a stale conference room, you were exchanging strides on a sun-drenched trail or rhythm on a dance floor?

Welcome to Networking 2.0. It’s the shift from transactional connections to transformational community, and it’s happening through the power of movement.

Why Traditional Networking is Failing High Achievers

As high-achieving women, we are hardwired for efficiency. We want our time to matter. Traditional networking often fails because it ignores the human need for genuine connection and the physical need for decompression. After eight hours behind a desk, the last thing your body: or your brain: needs is to sit in another chair and "talk shop."

This is where burnout begins to creep in. When our social connections feel like work, we lose the spaces where we can actually recharge. Fitness for high achievers shouldn't just be about hitting a PR on a treadmill; it should be a gateway to a supportive tribe that understands your drive but also values your humanity.

Networking 2.0 is about personal growth and fitness intersecting in a way that feels joyful rather than mandatory. It’s about building a community where your "stats" matter less than your "state of mind."

The Power of the Community Walking Group

There is something almost magical about walking side-by-side with someone. Unlike a face-to-face meeting, where the eye contact can feel intense and the pressure to fill the silence is high, a community walking group creates a natural, rhythmic flow.

When we move our bodies, our brains move too. We enter a state of mindful movement where the walls we build up during the workday start to crumble. In my Stryd Walk Club, I see this happen every single time. Women show up as strangers and leave as collaborators, friends, and confidantes.

Why does it work?

  1. Lowered Barriers: It’s hard to be "stiff" when you’re wearing leggings and sneakers.

  2. Shared Pace: Walking together literally puts you on the same path. You aren't competing; you're coexisting.

  3. The "Side-by-Side" Effect: Research shows that people often communicate more deeply when they aren't looking directly at each other. The movement facilitates a different kind of honesty.

Whether it’s the Stryd Walk Club on June 13th or our September meetup, these moments are about more than just getting your steps in. They are about finding your people.

Joy as the Ultimate Metric: The Zumba Connection

If walking is the steady conversation of Networking 2.0, then Zumba is the celebration.

For many high achievers, we spend our lives in "control mode." We manage teams, we manage households, and we manage our reputations. Zumba asks you to let go of that control. It asks you to be uncoordinated, to be loud, and to be joyful.

When you sweat and dance with a group of women, you aren't just exercising; you're building a shared history of joy. You’re seeing each other in a state of play, which is the fastest way to build trust. There’s no room for an elevator pitch when the beat drops. Instead, there’s room for laughter and the realization that the woman next to you: who might be a CEO, a surgeon, or a founder: is just as human as you are.

I invite you to experience this for yourself. I teach Zumba at Post Houston on the first Thursday of every month. For the rest of the month, you can find me at 6:30 PM in Trebly Park, Houston, Texas on every other Thursday.

Coming to a Zumba session at Post Houston isn't just a workout: it's a community-building powerhouse. You show up for the music, but you stay for the women who cheer when you finally nail that choreography.

Shifting Your Perspective: From "What Can I Get?" to "How Can We Move?"

If you want to start implementing Networking 2.0 in your own life, it starts with a mindset shift. Here is how you can pivot from traditional networking to movement-based community building:

1. Audit Your Social Calendar

Look at your scheduled "networking" events for the next month. How many of them leave you feeling energized? If the answer is "none," it's time to swap one coffee date for a walk date. Invite a colleague or a new connection to join you for a stroll at a local park.

2. Prioritize Presence Over Pitching

When you join a community walking group, leave your work brain in the car. Focus on the environment, the rhythm of your breath, and the person next to you. Ask questions like, "What’s bringing you joy lately?" instead of "What do you do for a living?"

3. Embrace the "Awkward"

Joining a new group can feel intimidating. Whether it's your first Stryd Walk Club or your first time trying Zumba, it’s okay to feel a little out of your element. That vulnerability is actually a bridge to deeper connection. Everyone else there has had a "first day" too.

4. Consistency is Key

Community isn't built in a single day. It’s built in the "every other Thursdays" and the "first Thursdays." It’s built when you show up even when you’re tired, because you know the movement will give you more energy than it takes.

Mindful Movement: The Antidote to Professional Burnout

We live in a world that rewards us for being "on" 24/7. For the high achiever, this often leads to a physical and emotional disconnect. We treat our bodies like vehicles to carry our brains from meeting to meeting.

Mindful movement: whether through walking, dancing, or a wellness retreat: reconnects the circuit. It reminds us that we are physical beings. When we combine this reconnection with a community of like-minded women, we create a safety net.

In our Health and Wellness Group, we talk about this often. It’s not just about the calories burned; it’s about the stress released and the bonds formed. It’s about knowing that when things get tough at work, you have a group of women who have walked miles with you and danced through the sweat with you. That is real networking.

Join the Movement in Houston

If you are ready to ditch the stiff suits and the awkward small talk, I’d love to see you out there. Networking 2.0 is waiting for you, and all it requires is a pair of shoes and a willingness to move.

  • For the Walkers: Check out our upcoming Stryd Walk Club dates. We meet regularly to soak in the fresh air and build real relationships.

  • For the Dancers: Join me for Zumba at Post Houston on the first Thursday of the month, or at Trebly Park for our 6:30 PM sessions on alternating Thursdays.

  • For the Deep Divers: If you’re looking for a more immersive experience in community and personal growth, take a look at our Presence Cohorts.

Remember, your career is a marathon, not a sprint. You don't have to run it alone. Let’s stop "networking" and start moving together.

Progress takes time, and perfection is never the goal. The goal is showing up: for yourself and for each other. I’ll see you on the trail (or the dance floor) soon!
