7 Mistakes You’re Making with Your Summer Routine (And How a Holistic Approach Fixes Them)

Summer in Houston is a vibe, but let’s be honest, it’s a high-pressure vibe. Between the skyrocketing humidity and the non-stop influx of "bikini body" advertisements, it’s easy to feel like you’re already behind before the first flip-flop hits the pavement.

As high-achievers, our instinct is to go hard. We want to do all the things, see all the people, and look incredible while doing it. But by mid-July, most of us find ourselves burnt out, dehydrated, and wondering where our peace of mind went. If you’ve ever ended a summer feeling like you need a three-week nap just to recover from your "vacation," this is for you.

Let’s look at the seven most common mistakes people make with their summer routines and how we can swap those frantic habits for a holistic approach that actually leaves you feeling empowered and energized.

1. Falling for the "Bikini Body" Trap

We need to have a serious talk about this phrase. The "bikini body" narrative suggests that your body is a seasonal project that needs to be "fixed" before it can be seen in public. This mindset is the ultimate buzzkill. It leads to restrictive dieting, over-exercising, and a toxic relationship with the mirror.

The Holistic Fix: Body Reconnection Instead of working out to shrink, work out to connect. A holistic approach focuses on how your body feels, moves, and breathes. When you shift your focus to body reconnection, you start choosing activities because they make you feel powerful, not because you’re trying to burn off a margarita. Your body is already a summer body, it just needs you to be present in it.

2. The "Yes-Man" Syndrome (Over-Scheduling)

Summer FOMO is real. There are rooftop parties, weddings, weekend trips, and family reunions. If your Google Calendar looks like a game of Tetris where no one wins, you’re making the mistake of over-scheduling. High-achievers often struggle to say "no" because we don't want to miss an opportunity for connection.

The Holistic Fix: The Power of the "Slow" Reset Holistic wellness means acknowledging that your energy is finite. You cannot be everywhere at once and still have enough left for yourself. Practice "Radical Prioritization." Choose one or two main events a month that truly light you up and protect the rest of your time fiercely. If you’re looking for a way to reset without the social drain, consider something like our Presence Luxury Fitness Retreat, which is designed to fill your cup rather than empty it.

3. Abandoning Structure for "Summer Chaos"

There’s a common misconception that summer should be a total free-for-all. While we love a bit of spontaneity, throwing your entire routine out the window creates a sense of "unmoored" anxiety. Without a morning rhythm or a consistent sleep schedule, your cortisol levels can spike, leaving you feeling frazzled.

The Holistic Fix: Flexible Frameworks Don't be a drill sergeant, but don't be a leaf in the wind either. Create a "Summer Framework." Maybe your morning routine during the school year is 90 minutes, but your summer version is a 15-minute mindful stretch and a glass of water. Keep the anchor, even if you shorten the time. Consistency is the secret sauce to mental health when the world around you feels chaotic.

4. Treating Dehydration Like a Suggestion

Houston heat is no joke. Most people wait until they are thirsty to drink water, but by then, you’re already behind. Dehydration leads to brain fog, irritability, and false hunger cues. When we add summer cocktails into the mix, our poor internal systems are working overtime just to keep us upright.

The Holistic Fix: Proactive Hydration Think of hydration as your internal air conditioning. Aim to drink half your body weight in ounces of water daily, and add electrolytes if you’re spending time outdoors. A holistic routine treats water as the primary fuel source. Carry a reusable bottle everywhere: treat it like your phone or your keys. You wouldn't leave the house without them; don't leave without your hydration.

5. Neglecting Movement Due to the Heat

It is hot. We get it. Many people make the mistake of stopping their fitness routine entirely because the thought of a midday run makes them want to melt. Or, conversely, they try to push through the heat and end up with heat exhaustion. Neither is a win.

The Holistic Fix: Chase the Shade (and the Joy!) The solution isn't to stop moving; it's to move smarter. Holistic fitness means listening to the environment. Join us for a Stryd Walk Club session early in the morning when the air is still fresh and the community vibes are high.

If you prefer to move in the evening, dance is the ultimate way to stay active without it feeling like a chore. I’d love to see you at one of my Zumba classes!

  • First Thursday of the month: Join me at Post Houston.

  • Every other Thursday: Catch me at 6:30 PM in Trebly Park, Houston, Texas.

Dancing under the stars (or the Trebly Park lights) is a way to celebrate your body’s capability while staying safe in the Texas heat. Check out the July Zumba session at Post Houston to get it on your calendar!

6. Sacrificing Sleep for "Sun-Induced Productivity"

With longer days comes the temptation to stay up later and wake up earlier. We feel like we should be "doing" more because the sun is out. This leads to a chronic sleep deficit that wreaks havoc on your hormones and your mood.

The Holistic Fix: Honoring Your Circadian Rhythm Just because the sun is still up at 8:30 PM doesn't mean your body doesn't need rest. A holistic summer routine prioritizes a "wind-down" hour. Dim the lights, put the screens away, and let your nervous system know it’s time to settle. Quality sleep is the foundation of any fitness goal: whether that’s building muscle or just staying sane during a family vacation.

7. Doing Summer in Isolation

High-achievers often fall into the "I can do it all myself" trap. We try to manage our fitness, our families, and our careers solo. But summer is a season of connection. When we isolate ourselves, we lose the accountability and the joy that comes from shared experiences.

The Holistic Fix: Find Your Hive Wellness is a team sport. Whether it’s a walking group or a dance class, being around like-minded women who are also striving for balance changes the game. It turns "I have to work out" into "I get to see my friends." That shift in perspective is the hallmark of a holistic lifestyle.

Your Summer, Reimagined

Summer doesn't have to be a season of "shoulds." You don't should have a certain body type, you don't should attend every party, and you don't should be perfect.

By avoiding these seven mistakes and leaning into a holistic approach, you can create a summer that feels as good as it looks. Focus on reconnection, prioritize your peace, and move your body in ways that spark joy.
